Oh Sirop!

Oh Sirop!

It is no secret that we, as Canadians, love our maple syrup. Indeed, as it enhances the flavour of other products [4], maple syrup is in every recipe (meal or dessert)! In fact, we love male syrup so much that in 2020, Canada produced about 14 million gallons of maple syrup [1], to be consumed by Canadians or to be exported throughout the world! Although our love for maple products runs deep, very little is known about the history of the industry, the harvesting process, the effects of climate change on maple forests and the maple market. Let me fix…

Men’s Wellness Bursary

by Alicia Harvey, Syed S. Ali and the help of Shirley Jobson (social worker) All around the world, men are found to be more reluctant to talk about their mental health than women. According to the World Health Organization, “males die by suicide at twice the rate of females” [1]. There are many reasons why men experience difficulty in seeking help for their mental health. While awareness on the importance of mental health has grown in the past few years, men may still view mental health problems as a flaw. Consequently, this leads to trouble when speaking about their mental…

Twelfth Night: A Review

Twelfth Night: A Review

Submitted anonymously to the Lions' Log On March 30th, 31st and April 1st, the SLC Theater Troupe presented an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, and I have only one way to describe the event: well-coordinated.  The actors delivered fantastic performances. Their acting skills made the audience believe they were in a true Shakespeare universe. The emotions presented were well delivered and submerged the audience entirely in the roles performed. This was especially the case with the actress interpreting Olivia. Her fine acting made one believe she was the actual Olivia. I enjoyed it when she tried to seduce Viola because…

The Mafia: an Unexpected Solution to Poverty

The Mafia: an Unexpected Solution to Poverty

Today, the term ‘mafia’ has dark and negative connotations; however, it wasn’t always the case. It was created to defend the weak and the ones in need. However, the Mafia’s goals shifted over time, and it entered another world. The Beginning The Mafia was originally created in Sicily. It is a small island south of Italy and it was historically invaded by many enemy powers such as the French, Spanish, Arabs, etc. Sicily saw the rise of capitalism in the 1860s when feudalism was abolished. Feudalism was an economic system based on land ownership. A lord was the owner of…

Clean Plates

On February 24th 2023, appeared for the first time ever on your local theatre’s screen Le plongeur, a movie by Francis Leclerc. Based on the famous novel by Stéphane Larue, Le plongeur beautifully narrates how Stéphane, played by Henri Picard, figures out his life as a young adult. Between his broken heart, his broken dreams, and his crippling addiction to gambling, Stéphane obtains a job as a dishwasher in a fancy restaurant. There, he discovers a strong community and unexpected friendships, notably with Bébert (Charles-Aubey Houde) and Bonnie (Joan Hart). From this point on, the story unfolds to showcase his…

Fighting Noise Pollution

Fighting Noise Pollution

Although living in a big city is exciting for many, it presents many downsides. One of these downsides is noise pollution, which is the “spread of unwanted sounds into the environment” [1]. According to The World Health Organization noise pollution occurs when a sound level is higher than 65 dB. In fact, a sound level becomes dangerous to the human ear at 75dB and even painful when above 120 dB [2]. However, sound levels are difficult to control; sound is everywhere, and we are constantly exposed to it. Sadly, being exposed to powerful sounds for years at a time can…

The Ups and Downs of Feminine Empowerment

The Ups and Downs of Feminine Empowerment

March 8th is International Women’s Day, which celebrates women’s achievements in the economy, politics and society, as well as the progress and importance of gender equality globally. This day was developed during the labour movements in the 1900s. The first International Women’s Day took place on March 19, 1911, in some European countries. This day was made possible because of the battles fought by many women to ensure equal gender rights for future generations. As a result, there are four distinctive waves of feminism, where each brought something different to fight for and furthered  the feminist cause. Allow me to…
