Gideon the Ninth, Tamsyn Muir Tamsyn Muir’s 2019 long fiction debut is the first book in a four-book series—the Locked Tomb, for which we are only awaiting the last one. The author from New Zealand has been delivering an epic adult science-fiction and fantasy series. Gideon the Ninth takes place in a strange world where an elusive Emperor rules over the nine Houses—nine planets—and he needs necromancers. Introduction  Jack-o'-lanterns, those grinning and eerie faces carved into pumpkins, are an unmistakable emblem of Halloween. They adorn doorsteps and decorate porches, casting an enchanting and, at times, ominous glow during the bewitching season. But have you ever wondered about the history and folklore that birthed this peculiar tradition? Let's delve into the enigmatic past of jack-o'-lanterns.  The Celtic Roots The history of jack-o'-lanterns can be traced back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrated on October 31st. Samhain marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of a dark, cold winter. The Celts believed that on…

The SLCSA is St. Lawrence’s student association. Its main goal is to make sure that every student at St. Lawrence gets the most out of his or her cégep experience. This is very broad, so we went and talked with the SLCSA’s president, Vincent Harvey, to find out what the SLCSA actually does to reach this goal. Here’s what we learned! The SLCSA The SLCSA is a group of 13 members which meet every week to discuss what happens in school and how they can improve student life. Members of the SLCSA are part of one or   multiple committees,…

I ran, ran, and ran, even if I felt like vomiting my supper and the sweet  dessert made from delicacy which I had eaten without any worry last evening. I kept remembering all the mornings of shivers, of sickness and of fear that regret would come back to haunt me. Eyes facing the road, wondering where the light from this tunnel would emerge, impatiently waiting. I could barely see where I was setting foot; all was cold, gloomy, uncomfortably wet, wet from the rain and wet from the sweat and tears. I kept remembering those words my father kept telling…

I did not regret it; these were part of my actions.  As I was on top of him, he could not lay still. It made me feel good, to finally make some decisions by myself. So, I did not hesitate one bit. Before I had time to think, my hand was touching his belly, it felt deep, then I continued my way down. He cried; I did not stop as he laid on his back defenseless. I had done my part, satisfied, I took a deep breath, trying to catch it. My heart was beating extremely fast, everything was done,…

In January 2023, the government of Canada promised $360 million to support the work of quantum scientists all across the country (CBC). But what is quantum physics? And why is it interesting? Quantum physics is “the study of matter and energy at its most fundamental level. It aims to uncover the properties and behaviors of the very building blocks of nature” (Caltech). Basically, it focuses on the tiny world of atoms and their constituents, how they work, and the relationships between them. Quantum physics is used in many scientific domains, such as biology, chemistry, astronomy, and the understanding of materials.…

Submitted anonymously to the Lions' Log On March 30th, 31st and April 1st, the SLC Theater Troupe presented an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, and I have only one way to describe the event: well-coordinated.  The actors delivered fantastic performances. Their acting skills made the audience believe they were in a true Shakespeare universe. The emotions presented were well delivered and submerged the audience entirely in the roles performed. This was especially the case with the actress interpreting Olivia. Her fine acting made one believe she was the actual Olivia. I enjoyed it when she tried to seduce Viola because…

On the 28th and 29th of April, the SLC band, What the Heck, will be performing its first 2023 concert! This show will include various music genres, such as rock, pop, disco, and soul. The theme for this concert is Throwback tracks. The band chose the songs that influenced their childhood, and since it is the last concert for many musicians in the band, it stands as a last hurrah before entering adulthood. The show will start at 8 p.m on both nights. There will also be a free and short event before the actual performance on the 27th of…

by Alicia Harvey, Syed S. Ali and the help of Shirley Jobson (social worker) All around the world, men are found to be more reluctant to talk about their mental health than women. According to the World Health Organization, “males die by suicide at twice the rate of females” [1]. There are many reasons why men experience difficulty in seeking help for their mental health. While awareness on the importance of mental health has grown in the past few years, men may still view mental health problems as a flaw. Consequently, this leads to trouble when speaking about their mental…

It is no secret that we, as Canadians, love our maple syrup. Indeed, as it enhances the flavour of other products [4], maple syrup is in every recipe (meal or dessert)! In fact, we love male syrup so much that in 2020, Canada produced about 14 million gallons of maple syrup [1], to be consumed by Canadians or to be exported throughout the world! Although our love for maple products runs deep, very little is known about the history of the industry, the harvesting process, the effects of climate change on maple forests and the maple market. Let me fix…
