THIS MUSIC MAY CONTAIN HOPE. – A Short Album Review

Released March 27th of this year, RAYE’s new album THIS MUSIC MAY CONTAIN HOPE. has been playing in my headphones on repeat. Anyone that knows me has heard my opinion on this masterpiece. Now, I’m here to try to convince YOU to listen to it. I will do my best to show the magic of the songs without spoiling and ruining the experience for you.

It is a 17-track album which takes the listener through the seasons, many eras of music and states of mind. Among these tracks, there is at least one song that you will relate to (for better or for worse). RAYE will reach you in your sorrow or distress, then take you by the hand to the finish line where you shall find hope.

Addressing various contemporary realities in a captivating narrative manner, immersion is guaranteed. The thrill, the sadness, the positivity, the humor, the hope… This album has it all.

With a proper intro and finale, this album is very theatrical. You will feel as though you are witnessing a complete performance, rather than simply listening to music. With the presence of great artists such as Al Green and Hans Zimmer (I’m so serious right now), as well as samples from Vivaldi, you get the impression that you are part of an event for the history books–and I’m barely exaggerating.

This album is not only an amazing piece of music, it is also a deeply personal work in which RAYE features people from her family such as her grandfather and two of her sisters. I felt the need to mention this because RAYE’s siblings, known professionally as Amma and Absolutely, are two talented artists showcasing a lot of potential.

One (small) spoiler that I do want to mention: this album ends with a proper list of credits! The artist thanks everybody who contributed to its creation, whether it be artists, producers, musicians, or even inspirations. I simply love it. I always listen to the full 4 and a half minutes.

Exploring the hardships of life and celebrating that which makes it worth living, reinforcing that we are never alone… RAYE’s latest release has shown me one thing: this album did in fact contain hope.

I hope you will find hope within it after your first listen… and if you did not, you should try again 🙂
