Contest Announcement: Who Can Spook Us Best?

Do you like short stories, plot twists, and horror?

Welcome to the Lions’ Log’s second contest of the semester! It is officially spooky season, meaning that the time for horror stories is finally here. We want to be scared and uncomfortable. We want to read horror short stories that will give us nightmares.

To participate, submit your short story on our club email (lionslogslc@gmail.com) or our president’s MIO (mia.bouchard@stu.slc.qc.ca) in a word format. No PDF or Google Docs format will be accepted. Here are the guidelines:

  • The theme of your short story must be horror and/or Halloween. You can write any genre, but it must follow the theme.
  • No AI of any format is permitted; not for ideas and especially not for writing. If we suspect you of using AI for your story or you will be disqualified.
  • Your story should be an original work. Do not submit an existing niche short story taken from another writer, otherwise you will be disqualified.
  • It should follow the structure of a short story, not one of a book chapter, an essay, or a summary. This also means that your story should end in a plot twist.
  • The length of your story should be between 400 and 1500 words. You can go over, but please try to stay within those limits.
  • We only accept one submission per person. However, we do accept collaborative works.

The winner will be determined by our team according to these criterias:

  • Originality of the work
  • An interesting and surprising plot twist
  • Following the theme
  • It should evoke horror, intrigue, discomfort…
  • A clear and appropriate structure
  • Grammar, plot structure, sentence structure…

To make sure that we can have a winner, you will be asked to put your full name and your student email (the one that looks like firstname.lastname@stu.slc.qc.ca). Our team will be the only one to see that information, unless you are the winner, in which case we will ask you if you are comfortable with us sharing your name in the winner announcement of the following issue. If you are not comfortable with sharing that information with us, we suggest that you do not participate, since we will not be able to identify you if you end up winning the contest.

The deadline will be on October 21st. After that date, we will no longer accept any submissions.

If you are the winner, we will contact you by MIO to give you your prize and to ensure that

The winning short story will be posted in our third issue that will come out on October 26th. The article’s name will be the title of the short story, followed by “Contest Winner.”

Keep an eye out for our third and last contest, which will be announced on the same date (October 26th)!

See you in three weeks on the Lions’ Log site!
